Bulkers ordered during Q3 2017
The third quarter of 2017 marked another bumper period for orders of bulk carriers, with firm orders for 121 vessels placed during the period, compared to just 13 ships in Q1 and 58 in Q2, according to Alibra data. Compare this with the 34 bulkers ordered up to this point in 2016.
Perhaps predictably, panamaxes have continued to be the order of the day. So far 95 panamaxes – almost exclusively kamsarmaxes – have been ordered so far this year, of which 67 were ordered this past quarter.
Around half of this year’s orders for capesizes and ore carriers were placed during Q3. We’ve tracked firm orders for 10 ore carriers of over 300,000 dwt and 15 capesizes during the period or 25 vessels in total, which is roughly half of the 53 orders seen this year to date for bulkers of 180,000 dwt and over. Valemaxes were the most popular type of bulk carrier ordered during the first nine months of 2016, with firm orders placed for ten 400,000-dwt ships.
Only three supras have been ordered so far this year, which may seem strange compared to the rate at which they have been changing hands in the S&P market (we’ve tracked around 130 transactions since the start of January).
